Washers just like any other appliance at home have a lifespan. During its lifespan we may encounter problems that will need attention. It could be a lose belt, faulty timer or leaky tubs. The good news is that there is a way to avoid costly washer repairs.

1. After using your washer, make sure you take out all damp clothes from the inside. Dampness can cause the machine to develop mold and a musty smell. To make extra sure that your washer is dry get a clean towel and wipe off the drum and rubber gasket of your washer. It’s also a good idea to open the door of your washer for a few hours to get rid of the excess moisture.

2. Another way to avoid expensive washer repair is to use only the prescribed number of detergent and softener per load. More detergent will not clean your clothes. Excess detergent will only cause accumulation of the substance in places where they should not be.

3. As much as possible only use your washer for full loads. This will make your washer more energy efficient and will not overwork your appliance.

4. To maintain your appliance and avoid costly washer repairs it’s also a good idea to run your machine on an empty water cycle with a cup full of vinegar. The vinegar will dissolve mold, hard minerals and prevent clogged drains and musty smell.

Maintenance is perhaps the best way to extend the life of our washers and appliances. If we take time to implement these simple strategies then we can surely avoid expensive washer repairs for a long time.
